No colour or religion ever stopped a bullet from a gun
One of fundamental flaws of human cognitive architecture is the belief that the world is fundamentally fair and just.
Much like it's distant cousin - cognitive bias, this assumption permeates all of our reasoning as an invisible, undetectable cancer, entwined with our self so closely so as to be nigh inseparable. From it grow ideas that are so central to our society and culture - such as moral, religion and justice - that they are in fact believed to be the purest example of human soul, the pinnacle of moral reasoning.
The problem with it is not just that it is really not true.
Most people would agree that the Universe is just a bunch of shit happening with little rhyme and reason, and much less caring about some universal justice, even though none of us is really ready to fully accept it since we lack the faculty to do so in the same way as a turtle lacks capacity to fly to the Moon.
The problem is that once this belief is accepted as an axiom, it poisons all of our thinking and judgement.
In simple terms, if one assumes that universe is fundamentally just - that is, good things tend to happen to good people, and bad things only happen with the bad people, it is inevitable to cinclude from observing something bad happening to someone, that he must - by dint of one's assumption of universal justice - to be a bad person, and therefore deserve in full whatever happens to him, for some current, past or future transgression or sin.
This line of reasoning then robs us of our compassion, prevents us from helping others and absolves us of responsibility for others' suffering, while giving us a false sense of security - in the end, no one truly believes himself to be a bad person.
Such is one of the great paradoxes of human logic - the belief in universal justice in itself makes us less just, and belief in morality of the universe makes us less compassionate, and ultimately less moral.
